In an extended post called "The Relationship Gap," Winkfield F. Twyman, Jr., reviews the careers of some of the most successful black leaders in the country and concludes that doing good work is not enough. To be
successful, it is necessary to build relationships with others, including mentors. He argues that black professionals lose out when they isolate themselves. He shows how people's careers blossom when they build relationships. His examples include Kenneth Frazier, general counsel of Merck; General Colin Powell; Secretary Condoleeza Rice; and the late multimillionaire investor Reginald Lewis. It is an excellent post, and I highly recommend it. Read it here.
