MENTAL PREPARATION. Mental preparation is also important for success. Identify your obstacles to putting in quality study time. Look at your avoidance tactics. For example, I had to stop myself from cleaning my apartment. This was my biggest avoidance tactic. I look
around my living room now, as I write this, and it is cluttered with my life. But during the exam preparation process, it was spotless. You need to acknowledge your own avoidance mechanisms, whether they are downloading music or video games, watching TV, calling your friends, net-surfing, repotting your plants, or staring at the ceiling. You know what they are for yourselves.
Each time avoidance mechanisms raise their heads, you can say to yourself, "Self, when this is over, I can indulge myself to my heart's content." Tell yourself, "I can stay up all night watching my favorite movies or riding my bike, but right now I need to focus on memorizing this rule."
Another way to handle the urge to avoid studying is to set a time limit for your diversions. As I said, my apartment was spotless. I gave myself 10-to-15-minute breaks to clean or take a walk. You must be vigilant about the time limits and return to your studies.
So put down that game boy and start studying!
